Sterilization Disinfection infection control Flashcards
Formaldehyde
Too irritant for use as a general disinfectant.
Pathogens causing lower respiratory tract infections
Staph aureus, P. aeruginosaa
Gamma Irradiation Energy
Sterilize large batches of small-volume items for vaccines, gloves, Ivs, needles, and syringes.
Halogens: Iodine and Iodophors
Useful skin disinfectants, sporicidal
Major routes of transmission of hospital-associated infection
fecal-oral, air, fomites
Sterilization
process of killing/removing all viable organisms
Pathogens causing bacteraemia
Staphylococci, Enterococci, Candida, k. pneumoniae
Pathogens causing UTI
E. coli, Candida, Enterococci, gram-negative (P.aeruginosa, K. pneumoniae)
Disinfection
removing/killing most viable organisms by using chemical disinfectant or boilin gwater
Halogens: Hypochlorites
Cheap, effective, active against viruses. For disinfecting equipment soiled in blood
Filtration
Use to recover very small number of organisms from very large volumes of fluids
Glutaraldehyde
Kills vegetative organisms, less toxic than formaldehyde, sporicidal
Antiseptics
reduce number of viable organisms on surface skin. Once washed out, bacteria can recolonize on skin within a few hours.
Prophylactic antibiotics
use in patients before dirty surgery like colonoscopy
Pasteruization
Used to reduce the number of bacteria in fluids and improve shelf life
