Sterile tech 1 Flashcards
Suture
A term for materials used to bring severed body tissue together and hold in place for healing
Natural Suture
Suture made from a living thing
Synthetic Suture
Man made suture
Absorbent Sutrue
Suture capable of being broken down by body enzymes
Plain suture
Suture not treated for delayed absorbtion
Chromic Suture
Suture treated with a chemicle for delayed absorbsion
Non-Absorbable suture
Suture under normal circumstances not capable of being broken down by body enzymes
Monofilament suture
Suture made from one strand of material, slippery, less likley to see bacterial infections
Multifilament Suture
Suture made of many braided starnds, more likley to see bacterial infections
Capillary
Ability of a strand of suture to wick liquids
Non-Capilary
Inability of a strand of suture to wick liquids
Memory
Ability of a strand of suture to remember what the operator wants the suture to do
Ligature
A strand of suture amterial to ligate blood vessels or to issolate a mass of tissue to be excissed
Surgical gut
Suture made form intestines, usually sheep
Approximation
Bringing together of tissue edges
Primary Suture Line
Line of sutures that approximate the edges of an incision
Stay Suture
Heavy non-absorbable suture placed through tissue on each side and a short sidtance from the primary suture line to relieve tension
Tensile Strength
Amount of pull or weight neccessary to break suture
Guage
Diameter of suture material
Aught
Zero
Vicryl (Brand)/Polyglactin 910 (Generic)
Synthetic, multifilament, absorbs in 56-70 days
Dexon (Brand)/Polyglycolic Acid (Generic)
Synthetic, multifilament, absorbs in 90-120 days
PDS (Brand)/Polydioxanone (Generic)
Synthetic, Monofiliament,absorbs in180 days
Maxon (Brand)/Polyglyconate (Generic)
Synthetic, monofilament, absorbs in 180 days
Abdomnial SX shave
Xiphoid process to pubis, around both sides of the animals. Cryptorchid use this prep
Shave for Neuters
Lightly graze over testicle with clippers, cats and rabbits can be plucked. 2-4 in around and behind the testicles.
Ortho SX shave
Hang leg, clip entire circumference of limb.
Order of Draping Soft Tissue
4 quarter drapes, Towel clamps, Patient drape, Mayo scissors, Michelle clips
Order of draping Ortho
Quarter drapes, towel claps, stockinette and or vet wrap, patient drape
SX table set up
Peripad, ciculating H2O blanket, peripad, cautery grounded plate wrapped in a wet towel
Hernia
Protrusion of an organ through an abnormal opening in the muscle wall of the cavity the surronds it
Incision
A cut produced surgically by a sharp instrument
Laparotomy
any surgical incision into the peritoneal cavity
Linea- alba
The mid abdominal, fibrous white connective tissue
Paracentesis
The manual evacuation of fluid from a body cavity
Proud flesh
Excessive granulation tissue growth in areas previously traumatized
Recumbancy
The state of laying down`
Static
Inhibits growth or replication
Back up table
Sterile table or counter that holds DVM gloves, gown, Pt drapes, quarter drapes, etc.
Cautery
Instrument that seals the vessel with a controlled electrical current that burns or cauterizes the bleeding end of that vessel
Circulator
The mediator between sterile and non sterile personel
Drapping
Application of sheets of various materials to tissue areas surrounding a proposed surgical site in an effort to minimize the transfer of contaminants
Fenestrated
An object that has holes or openings
Mayo stand
A stand, when coverd is considerd steril, that holds sterile instrumentsand suture
Quarter Drapes
Drapes, usually 4, that protect the Pt and the sterile field between the Pt and the Pt drape
Scrub nurse
Assistant to surgeon, wears the same attire as the sureon
Suction
Drawing out fluids
Wicking
The act of transporting liquid via capillary action
