Brucellosis
Caused by brucella abortus. In cows causes late term abortion and shedding in the milk. In bulls causes orchitis infertility and shedding in the semen. Reportable disease. Vaccine RB-51. Positive cattle are culled
IBR (Infectious bovine rhinotracheitis)
Fever, nasal discharge, conjunctivitis, coughing, dyspnea, hyperemia of the muzzle. can cause abortions. Mostly young cattle get it in highly stressful situations. “red nose”
Foot and mouth disease
Highly contagious, zoonotic. HIgh fever oral lessions with sringy or foamy saliva, blisters on feet, weight loss, decline of milk production. Transmitted by coughing and sneezing. Positive animals culled 1-2 mile quarantined. present in Asia, Africa, South America. Not in North America, Australia, Europa
Bovine viral diarrhea (BVD)
Caused by pertivirus. mucosal erosions, diarrhea are acute signs. Chronic signs - shed the virus causing reproductive loss throughout the heard. MLV vaccine. Supportive care not usually deadly
Black leg disease
Clostridium chauvoei. Swelling causes Sub-Q emphysema . Antibiotics, burn upper soil needs to be caught early. Vaccine available.
Vesticular stomatitis
Zoonotic. erosions and ulcers mainly on mouth feet and udder, prepuce, and coronary band. Transmitted by mosquitos. Quarantine, supportive care until ulcers heal 7-10 days. No vaccine, is reportable.
Strangles
Streptoccus equi, horse distemper. Infection of the nasopharynx. Causes abscesses and swelling of the lymph nodes. Vaccine. Penicillin, isolation 6 weeks.
West Nile
Mosquetos. Crosses BBB and interferes with CNS function. Muscle weakness, stumbling or tripping, head pressing or head tilting, loss of appitite, circling, fever, convolsions, coma, death. Vaccine.
EPM (Equine protozoal myelitis)
Caused by protozoa sarcocysis neurona. Not transmitted horse to horse definitive host is possum from birds. Ingested sporscysts pass into bloodstream and BBB. Asymmetrical neurologic signs. Anti-protozoal meds, 3-6 months for TX. Spinal tap and blood work to diagnose.
Pigeon Fever
Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis. Painful swelling of pectoral muscles, ventral abdomen or inguinal area, mild fever, lamness, reluctance to move. Highly contagious, rarely fatal, lives in soil. Lance abscess, keep clean, isolate, abx, novaccine
Cranial mesenteric artery
Common anerism sight in horse. caused by parasite Strongylus vulgaris. blockage of artery or its branges causes colic
