Optho Flashcards
3 layers of the eye
Fibrous tunic, vascular tunic, nervous tunic
Outer layer of the eye
Fibrous tunic. Sclera & cornea
Midle layer of eye
Vascular tunic. Also known as uvea, choroid, tapetum lucidum/pecten oculi, ciliari body, iris, corpora nigra, pupil
Inner layer of eye
Nervous tunic. Retina,photoreceptors, lens
Sclera
white of the eye, caudal part of the fibrous tuinc, function- shape and protection
Cornea
Transparent window, rotral part of the eye, cover iris and anterior chamber, nonvascular. Function- Pain reception & admits light to interior of the eye
Choroid
Posterier part of vascualr tuinic, thin dark membrane, forms highly reflective area in rear of eye called tapetum lucidum, suplies nutrition to retina
Tapetum lucidum/pecten Oculi
Highly reflective area in back of eye. light amlifier, herbavoirs are green/yellow, carnivors are blue/green. Pigmented to protect from UV rays in reptiles and birds.
Ciliary body
Thickest portion of the vascular tunicbetween choroid and iris
Ciliary muscle
Attaches to the suspensery ligaments
Ciliary processes
Secrete aqueous humor
Suspensory ligament/zonular ligament
Holds lens in position, allows shape of lens to change due to actions of ciliary muscles
Accommodation
Process of altering the shape of the lens
Iris
Colored doughnut shaped part of the eye surrounding pupil, contains 2 layers of muscles and increases and decreses size by controling the amount of light entering the eye
Corpora nigra(horse)/Granula iridica(Cow)
Protects eye from direct sunlight
Pupil
Cetral opening of the iris that lets light into the eye
Heterochromia
Variations in iris color, an excess of lack of pigmentation
Heterochromia iridis
Variations of color of different regions i iris of the same eye
Heterochroia iridum
Variations of iris color between two eyes
Fundus
General term for the portion of an organ opposite its opening
Retina
Lines only caudal part of eye
Photoreceptors
Lighe sensetive 1st layer fo the retina, dentrites-rods and cones, domestic anomals have many rods and few cones
Rods
Sensitive to dim light (night vision) & shapes
Cones
Sensitive to color and sharpness
Lens
Transparent biconvex structure, located caudal to iris, part of the refracting mechanism of eye
Refraction
The bending of light to a center point of focus
Palpebrae
Eyelids, 2 moveable folds protecting rostral surface of the eye
Blepharo
Prefix for eyelid
Lateral and medial canthi
Angles where upper and lower eyelids meet
Canthus
Where lids come together
Meibomian Gland
Exocrine gland associated with each lash secretes an oil that has component of tears
conjunctiva
Mucus membrane lining eylid and eyball, produces mucous inner layer of tears and has antibiotic substance that helps protect the eye
