stereotypes
used to make sense of a complex world
attitudes and impressions based on limited and superficial information about a specific group
stereotypes content model
attempts to classify stereotypes based on warmth and competency
paternalistic stereotype - high warmth (not competitive to the in-group), low comp (low status). ex. housewives, elderly
contemptutous stereotype - low warmth (cmopetitive to the in-group), low competence. ex. welfare recipients
admiration stereotype - high warmth, high comp. ex. in-group, allies.
envious stereotype - high comp, low warmth. ex. rich people
self-fulfilling prophecy
stereotype causes the individual to conform to the sterotype
stereotype threat
worried about conforming to a stereotype and perform worse as a result.
prejudice
an irrational positive or negative attitude towards a person, thing, or group prior to an actual experience with that entity
influenced by power, prestige, status
