Stereochemistry Flashcards
what is chiral
an object that can’t be superimposed on it’s mirror image
what is a chiral atom
an atom bonded to 4 different groups
what is an enantiomer
opposite of disastiomer
what is an isomer
same atoms in a molecule
what is a stereoisomer
same atoms are all connected in 3D
what is an achiral object
object that is superimposable on it’s mirror image
what is the aufbau diagram and what does it mean
extra electrons may not necessarily fill the shells in a linear format
e.g.
1s
2s 2p
3s 3p 3d
4s
–> draw the lines diagonally and see that 3p –> 4s –> 3d
what happens when when there is a large jump in ionization energy
it means the valence electrons have been removed e.g. energy required in the inner shell is > energy required to remove valence electrons
what is an enantiomer and what is one of the requirements (not guarantees) that it will exist
an enantiomer is arrangement of molecules that is superimposable on it’s mirror image
if there is an enantiomer then there will be a chiral carbon
