Reaction rates Flashcards
what is the rate of reaction
the change in the concentration of the reaction wrt time measured in mol/s like velocity which is m/s
what factors affect reaction rates
- surface area e.g. smaller pieces have a larger rate than bigger pieces
- temp
- catalyst
what step of a reaction is the rate determining step
the slowest step
assuming the first step of a rate reaction reaches a fast eq. what 2 rates are equal?
rate of forward reaction = rate of backward reaction
what is a synthesis
2 reactants become one product
A + B –> AB
what is decomposition
single compound becomes 2
AB –> A + B
what is combustion
reaction with O2 to form CO2 + H2O
what is redox
oxidation –> lose electrons
A –> An + ne-
reduction –> gain electrons
Bm + me- –> B
what is neutralisation
acide + base –> salt + H2O
HA + BOH –> BA+ H2O
what is hydrolysis
breakdown of a compound due to reaction with water
AB + H2O –> AH + BOH
what is condensation
2 molecules releasing water
A + B –> AB + H2O
what are addition/elimination reaction
addition = atoms added to double or triple bonds (hence breaking them)
elimination = atoms removed (hence creating double/triple bonds)
