Step 6: Improve New Works Flashcards
What is the goal of evaluating?
to build up, not to tear down
How can the need for evaluating be reduced?
by including the right people from the beginning of the process: social and religious leaders, expert performers, expert creators; doing good research
What are the goals for Step 6?
develop culturally-accepted guidelines for evaluating, develop an evaluation process, design a recurring cycle of evaluation, evaluate scripture-infused arts
What guidelines can be used for evaluating artistic works?
analyze according to the seven lenses using the community’s standards for the artistic domains
Evaluation questions to ask focusing on the community’s standards
How does correction normally happen? Did the work achieve its desired effects? How did the people react? What do they say about the work? Are they still valuing and using the work?
Evaluation questions to ask for a recurring cycle of evaluation
Who should check? Does the art work communicate the intended message? Is the community able to duplicate the art work? Does it parallel an existing accepted form?
How to test for scriptural fidelity?
self-check by the artist him or herself; consultant check for accuracy in form and theology, community check with a small group of the intended audience
Questions to ask for a community check
What is it about? What did you see or hear? What happened? What did you think was being communicated? What did you learn? What did you like or appreciate? What did you not like or appreciate? Did anything offend you??
