Why do we research artistic genres?
we don’t know what is really happening unless we study it; research helps us enter into the genre; research facilitates sparking, improving, and celebrating to integrate for continuity

How does one describe the event and its genres?
determine the apparent purposes (where, when, what goals, what effect), the emotions (participants, audience, feelings being communicated), values demonstrated (worldview, values, beliefs), communal investment (resources, time, finances, people)

Definition of space
the location, demarcation, and physical characteristics of the area used which can affect the form of artistic communication
Define shape of the event through time
the length and segments within the work indicated by changes in the elements involved in the work
Define participant organization
the roles people play, how they interact with each other, how they use the space
Define materials
the tangible things identified with the event
Define performance features
the patterns characteristic of the performance; things people do that can be transcribed
Define content
the subject matter or topic of the artistic event communicated in words, movements, symbols
Define underlying symbolic systems
the rules, expectations, grammatical structures, motivations, and experiences that govern what the performers do
