Stem cells Flashcards
What can plant cells do that most animal cells cannot?
Differentiate throughout lifetime.
What is cell division restricted to in mature animals?
Cell replacements and repair.
Stem cells?
Cells which can differentiate into different types of cells.
Where can stem cells be found?
In adult bone marrow and human embryos.
How can nerve cells be used?
Help those paralysed by spinal cord injuries.
How can beating heart muscle cells be used?
For those with heart disease.
How can insulin producing cells be used?
For those with diabetes.
For stem cells? 2
- those who are alive and suffering are more important than an embryo
- unwanted embryos from fertility clinics which would be otherwise destroyer could be used for research
Against stem cells? 2
- killing a potential human life
* scientists should concentrate on other ways of obtaining stem cells rather than using them from embryos
How are offspring produced by asexual reproduction produced by?
Mitosis of the parental cells.
What do the offspring produced by asexual reproduction contain?
The same alleles as the parent.
