Organisms and their environment Flashcards
What does temperature affect?
The rate of an organism’s metabolism.
What can’t some organisms do? 2
- maintain a constant high body temperature
* tolerate extreme temperatures
What may organisms that maintain a constant high body temperature struggle with?
To survive in extreme temperatures.
Why are nutrients essential?
(Such as nitrates) for the growth of plants and microorganisms.
What happens if there’s a low concentration of nutrients?
Organisms struggle to grow and survive.
What do plants require as an energy source for photosynthesis?
Light.
What happens in low light intensities?
Plants grow very slowly.
What do all organisms require?
Water.
Why is water essential?
Chemical reactions that occur inside and outside cells occur in solution of water.
What happens in the absence of water?
Cells, and therefore organisms, die.
What is essential for aerobic respiration?
Oxygen.
When can oxygen become limited? 2
- in the soil
* in water
What happens when oxygen is limited in the soil?
Plant roots cannot grow and absorb mineral ions and water.
What happens when oxygen is limited in water?
Aquatic organisms struggle to respire and survive.
Transact?
A line across a habitat or part of a habitat.
