Inheritance Flashcards
What did Mendel work out?
The main principles of inheritance in the 19th century.
What did Mendel study?
Inheritance in pea plants.
What did Mendel notice?
Certain characteristics that were shown by 2 pea plants were not always shown in their offspring.
What happened when Mendel crossed offspring together?
Characteristics sometimes reappeared in the next generation.
What did Mendel carry out?
Thousands of crosses with pea planet and he found that many characteristics were inherited in predictable patterns.
What idea did Mendel propose?
Separately inherited factors.
What does each individual inherit?
A set of factors from each of their parents.
Why weren’t Mendel’s discoveries recognised until after his death? 3
- published work in obscure journal
- DNA, chromosomes and genes were not yet discovered
- people could not accept the link between plants and humans
