Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is light energy absorbed by?
A green substance called chlorophyll.
How is the energy used?
By converting carbon dioxide (air) and water (soil) into sugar (glucose).
Why will a low temperature limit the rate?
The molecules will move less and therefore the reaction happens slower.
How will a shortage of carbon dioxide limit the rate?
Fewer molecules will be available.
How will a shortage of light limit the rate?
Less energy to power the reaction.
Why use a greenhouse?
Easiest way to create the ideal environment to grow plants.
Use of artificial light? 2
- allows photosynthesis to continue after daylight hours
* provide a higher than normal light intensity
What do greenhouses trap?
The sun’s heat but makes sure that the temperature isn’t limiting.
When are heaters and ventilation used?
In winter.
How is the level of carbon dioxide increased?
Farmers use paraffin heaters to heat the greenhouse and carbon dioxide is a by-product.
What happens to glucose in plants and algae? 2
- converted into soluble starch for storage
* used in respiration
What is glucose used for? 3
- producing fats and oils for storage
- producing cellulose
- produce proteins (with nitrate ions from the soil)
