Stem cells Flashcards
what are 2 uses of cells?
- Scientists take the yeast or bacteria cells, and alter them so they can produce insulin protein the same produced by humans.
- Healing people with severe burns. New cells must grow and cover the injured area.
What are stem cells?
Stem cells are cells that are able to grow and develop into many types of specialized cells.
What are the 3 main types of stem cells?
The three main types are Embryonic cells which are taken from excess Embryos produced during In-vitro fertilization procedures and can turn into any type of specialized cell. The second type is adult stem cells which are present in different parts of the body but are limited to the type of cells that they can grow into. The third type is Induced stem cells which are specialized adult cells that are reprogrammed into any type of cell.
What is the ethical issue of using Embryonic stem cells?
When embryonic stem cells are taken, the embryo is destroyed so people say that it could’ve been the life of a person, but you killed it. other people say that such embryos would have been destroyed anyway.
What is an embryo?
The early developmental stage of an animal while it is in the egg or within the uterus of the mother.
How can stem cells be used?
using stem cells in the treatment of conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, spinal cord injuries, and multiple sclerosis.
What happens to the stem cells found in the bone marrow?
Stem cells found in the bone marrow are able to form certain blood cells. doctors have used this in the treatment of blood diseases or following chemotherapy for many years. These stem cells are able to divide and form new healthy blood cells.
Why have Induced stem cells been welcomed by scientists?
Because they can be used in research without the ethical issues associated with using embryonic stem cells.
What happens to the embryo when the embryonic stem cells are taken?
the embryo gets destroyed
