Calculating Magnification Flashcards
What can our eye observe?
Our naked eye can observe as small as 100 micrometers. However, for smaller objects, we need a light microscope, and for objects even smaller than 100 nanometers, we can observe them through the electron microscope.
The formula to calculate Magnification is:
Image size=Actual size x Magnification
Actual=Image size over Magnification
Magnification=Image size over Actual size
How to calculate Magnification
meter—centimeter=x100
centimeter—millimeter=x10
millimeter—micrometer=x1000
micrometer—nanometer=x1000
…………………………………………………………………………..
nanometer—micrometer=Divide 1000
micrometer—millimeter=Divide 1000
millimeter—centimeter=Divide 10
centimeter—meter=Divide 100
A student draws a diagram of a cheek cell with a width of 40millimeter. The actual width of the cell is 25 micrometer.
What is the magnification of the drawing?
Magnification=Image size over Actual size.
Millimeter—Micrometer 40 x 1000=40000 Divided by 25=1600
