Specialised cells Flashcards
What do specialized cells mean?
Specialized cells carry out certain function for the organism
What are examples of specialized cells?
Sperm cell
Nerve cell
Cilia
Red blood cell
Sperm cell
Function: Sperm cells must be able to travel to meet an egg for Fertilization
Structure: Has a tail (Flagellum) which makes it propel/move the sperm forward. The head for getting into the female cells
Nerve cell
Nerve cells also called Neurons
Function: Send messages from one part of the body to another very quickly
Structure: Have a long connection at each end to send messages, the membrane has a fatty layer called the myelin sheath. The sheath allows to send
messages very quickly by an electrical signal
Cillia
Function: Able to trap the dust particles and prevents them from reaching the lungs
Structure: Hair like projections
Red Blood cell
Function: Carrying oxygen throughout the body
Structure: Hemoglobin joins with oxygen and gives the cell a red color, the biconcave increases the surface area enabling them to exchange oxygen with its surroundings more quickly and it is flexible, and the curve shape is flexible which helps it move easily in the blood vessel.
