Continuous variable
A variable the can exist within a range (E.g BMI - can range from 18.5-50).
Categorical variable
Can be grouped into categories (e.g blood type, race)
Discrete variable (usually integers).
Variable that can only take certain values (e.g. number of children)
Nominal variable
- One that has two or more categories, but there is no intrinsic ordering to the categories (e.g. hair colour, occupation).
Social selection / social mobility and health inequality
- Ill health can limit social mobility / sociecomic class as it decreases ability to work, decreasing income , leading to lower social class and in turn contribute to health inequalities
Artefect
Suggests proposed observeed differences are due to differences in measurement and so are not actually opresent
Cultural / behavioural explanation of health inequality
Differences in behaviour causes differences in health
Idealist explanation of health inequality
Indiciual construction of health is differenet in different grousps so they might define health differently
Materialist explanation of health inequality
Emphasises the role of economic and social factors such as income, education and employment in shaping health outcomes.
