Test for facial muscle function by asking the patient to
wrinkle forehead, squeeze eyes shut, smile, puff out cheeks
Verbalize while inspecting facial features, hair, scalp and skull

Light touch to FH, cheeks, chin
“Close your eyes. Say “now each time you feel me touch your face”
While palpating facial bones and sinus, say
“Now I will palpate facial bones and frontal and maxillary sinuses”
What nerve is tested by palpating masseter m?
CN V motor
While palpating TMJ and ROM and masseter, say
“Open your mouth, move your jaw from side to side and clench your teeth. CN V motor is intact.”
When palpating hair, scalp and skull say
“Symmetrical hair distribution, hair is coarse (straight, curly)”
While inspecting hearing, say
(rub fingers next to each ear) “Tell me when you hear my fingers rubbing rogether”
To inspect auricle and surrounding tissue, say
“I am going to INSPECT ears and PALPATE for any signs of lumps, masse, lesions, battle signs, tragial or mastoid tenderness. There is no discoloration of the mastoid, no edema, no ecchymosis (bruises)”

While performing otoscopic exam, say
“canals are clear. TM is pearly gray and translucent, light reflex present, landmarks are normal. No fluid in the middle ear”
When inspecting and palpating nose, say
“I am going to palpate the nasal bone - everything is normal. Nose is midline without lesions.”
To test for nasal patency, say
“Occlude one nostril with your index finger and sniff/breath in”
