Head Neck ABNORMAL exam Flashcards
What nerve is tested by sharp/dull touch of face test?
CN V sensory
When examining the head, do the following
- Palpate temporal arteris
- Auscultate for bruits (with bell?)
- Percuss sinuses
- Transilluminate sinuses if tender to palpation (frontal and maxillary)
- Sharp/dull touch of face (CN 5 sensory)
How to perform sharp/dull touch of face test
Use broken q-tip
“close your eye and tell me when you feel sharp or dull sensation when I touch your face”
Specialized Eye exam do:
- Palpate lacrimal gland and lacrimal sac
- perform upper lid eversion when necc
- Cover-uncover test for strabismus (if corneal light reflexion is not symmetrical)
- Test visual fields (CN II)
- Corneal reflex (CNV) - not performed on actors
What nerve is tested with corneal reflex and how?
CN V
Use wisp of cotton from q-tip to gently touch cornea and check for blink reflex
What nerve is tested by doing visual field test?
CN II (optic)
Weber tests for and how
Laterization
Place vibrating tuning fork on top center of head. “Tell me if you hear the sound better of the right, left or the same in both ears.”
Rinne tests for and how
Bone conduction vs air conduction
Place vibrating tuning fork on mastoid process: “Tell me when the sound stops.” Then move fork in front of ear canal and ask if the patient can hear it. If pt can hear, then AC>BC in that ear which is normal. If patient Can’t hear it, then BC>AC in that ear and CN VIII in the other ear is defective (?)
Which nerve is testing by doing a smell test?
CN I (olfactory)
Mouth and Pharynx specialized exams are done by testing
- Gag reflex (CN 9 and 10)
2. Taste (CN VII)
Which nerve is involved in taste?
CN VII (facial)
Which nerve is involved in gag reflex?
CN 9 and 10 (Glossopharyngeal and vagus)
Specialized neck exam is done by
Auscultate thyroid for bruits, if enlarged
