cognitive stage
- initial phase of learning a motor skill where conscious understanding of task is required
- make many errors and are unable to detect and correct these errors
- skills may develop rapidly at this stage
- skills need to be broken down into smaller, simper parts (point, step, throw)
associative stage
- the second phase in the learning of a new skill, movement patterns are refined and more consistent
- perform basic mechanics of skill with relatively few mistakes and understands what required to correct errors
- need regular feedback for skill development
autonomous stage
- final stage of learning a skill, performer is able to perform the skill automatically
- make very few mistakes and have consistent performance
- require lower level of attention therefore allows time for greater decision making
- needs to focus on game like situations and develop higher order thinking

NEGATIVE - less money = less access

gender - what is available for your specific gender
NEGATIVE - only certain gender may have specific access to certain sports and sports levels

family/friends - family interests and exposure
(friends interests and behaviour)
POSITIVE - introduced to certain sports at a young age due to parents interests/hobbies
