Describe the first stage of labor.
A
- 2 phases (latent and active phase)
- latent phase begins with mild contractions, softens the cervix
- contractions become more rhythmic and stronger
- active phase begin s at 3 - 6 cm of cervical dilation

Describe the second stage of labor.
A
- begins with complete cervical dilatation
- strong contractions with active pushes
- baby’s head emerges from the birth canal

Describe the third stage of labor.
A
- the period between the delivery of the fetus and the delivery of the placenta (takes abt 15 to 30 mins)

What is the intrapartum management for the 1st stage of labor?
A
- periodic assessment of the frequency and strength of uterine contractions
- monitor the fetal heart rate during / immediately after uterine contractions
