What are the signs of pregnancy?
Presumptive signs
- absence of menstruation
- nausea and vomiting
Probable signs
- darkness of the vulva (Chadwick’s sign)
- softening of the cervix (Goodell’s sign)
Positive signs
- fetal heartbeat
- fetal movement
What are the physiologic maternal changes?
- increased blood supply to breasts and uterus
- changes in senses of taste, smell, increased saliva
- increased heartrates
Describe the 1st trimester.
Week 1 to 12
- baby develops rapidly, organs develops
- menstruation stops
In the baby
- heart starts beating on the 8th week
- face starts to form
Describe the 2nd trimester.
Week 13 to 28
- early pregnancy symptoms gradually disappear
- uterus grows rapidly in size
In the baby
- skin forms on the 16th week
- can hear and swallow on the 20th week
Describe the third trimester.
Week 29 to 40
- shortness of mother breath
- belly button may stick out
In the baby
- fetus set into head-down position
- bones fully formed on the 34th week
