What is gestational diabetes mellitus?
A
It is when the glucose levels in the blood are higher than usual during pregnancy.

What causes diabetes?
A
It happens when there isn’t enough insulin produced which is what keeps the level of glucose in our blood at a healthy level.

Differences between type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
A
Type 1
- 10 to 20% of total cases
- below 40 yrs of age
- happens suddenly
Type 2
- 80 to 90% of total cases
- above the age of 40
- happens gradually

What are the different gestational diabetes?
A
- Pregestational (diabetes before pregnancy)
- Gestational (develops during pregnancy)
- Overt (has a glucose level of 200mg/dl)

What are the risk factors of GDM?
A
- being overweight
- smoking
- family h/o diabetes
- maternal age above 35 years

What are the complication of diabetes during pregnancy?
A
- premature delivery
- urinary tract infection
- prolonged labor
- an extra large baby

A
- antenatal care
