What does change go against?
It goes against human nature and what’s familiar to it that is why most people do not change a health behavior unless it’s a good reason.
What is a widely used model of change and its purpose?
The stages of change model and its helpful when it comes to personal trainers trying to change patterns of physical activity.
What are the stages of change in order.
Precontemplation, contemplation, determination, action, relapse, maintenance.
What stages can you enter and exit at any stage.
Determination and relapse.
What is the step 1 precontemplation?
Usually a trainer does not see the client since they have no intention to change. The best way to deal with them is to educate them and dispel myths.
What is the purpose of step 2 contemplation?
People are thinking about becoming more active in the next 6 months. They are best moved by education. See what the clients pros and cons are of exercising and help the client develop motivational programs.
What is the purpose of stage 3 preparation?
People in this stage exercise occasionally but plans to exercise regularly in the next months. They have unrealistic expectations which leads to a high risk of dropout and disappointment. To help the client clarify realistic goals.
What is the purpose of stage 4 action?
these clients exercise but do not maintain the behavior for 6 months. Continue to educate and discuss barriers to exercise. Work with you client to develop action steps.
What is the purpose of stage 5 maintenance?
These people have maintained change for 6 or more months. They are still tempted to return to old habits. A PT should suggest the client to maintain a maintenance check in plan.
What do check in plans include?
reinforcing pros, discuss progress, and changing up your workout plan
