They make sure patients are not abused, and legal rights are protected. they can be a nurse, trained volunteer, or a social worker

right to participate in and direct healthcare decisions, right to accept or refuse medical or surgical treatment, right to prepare an advance directive, right to view information on the facilities policies recognizing advance directives. right to know how the facility educates its staff regarding advance directives
What is advance directives
A patient who is given instructions about healthcare decisions for when they are incapacitated
What does a durable power of an attorney do
grants another person the authority to make legal decisions for you
What is a guardian
a person appointed by court to make decisions to protect the interests of a patient who is mentally or physically incapacitated
What is a emancipated minor
a person under 18 who is financially and legally responsible for themselves
What is duty of care
an obligation for healthcare workers to take reasonable care to avoid causing harm to a patient
What is negligence
Performing an act that a reasonable person would not have done (also mean failing to provide reasonable care)
