culture is learned (taught to others) culture is shared (common practices and beliefs are shared with others in a cultural group) culture is social in nature (individuals in the group understand appropriate behavior based on tradition) Culture is dynamic and constantly changing (new ideas may generate different standards for behavior
What is ethncity
classification of people based on national origin and or culture.
what is race
classification of people based on physical or biological characteristics. (used to label people and explain behavior)
what is cultural diversity
differences based on cultural, ethnical, and racial factors. which can influence an individual’s behavior
what is cultural assimilation
process that represents the absorption of many different cultures into a given area
What is acculturation
process of learning the beliefs and behaviors of a dominant culture and assuming some of the characteristics
what is bias
preference that inhibits impartial judgement (all whites are superior, young people are physically superior to old people)
what is prejudice
pre-judging a strong belief about a person/subject that is formed without reviewing facts of information.
what is stereotypeing
occurs when assumption is made that everyone in particular group is the same (all blondes are dumb)
What is family organization
the structure of a family and dominant decision making person in the family
what is a nuclear familiy
mother, father, and children.
what is extended family
includes nuclear plus grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins
