Why were most Texans on the frontier more vulnerable to attack by the Native Americans during the Civil War?
Most of the men had left for and from the war.
Why were the line of forts along the frontier unsuccessful in preventing Native American raids?
- Forts were often too far apart from each other and had a shortage of supplies.
- Soldiers were inexperienced.
- Natives attacked quickly and disappeared.
At the Ft. Parker massacre, members of her family were killed in a raid and as an 8-year-old, was captured. In 1860, the Texas Rangers found her and returned her to her white family, died of a broken heart.

The U.S. did not keep its promises to provide supplies. Many agents on the reservation were corrupt and sold supplies for their profit. Natives were not interested, they didn’t want to lose their way of life, they also kept raiding.
