SR 24 - Surgical Respiratory Care Flashcards
What is the most common cause of fever in the first 28-hours post-op?
Atelectasis
What is absorption atelectasis?
Elevated inhaled oxygen replaces the nitrogen in the alveoli resultin in collapse of the air sac (atelectasis)
Nitrogen keeps alveoli open by ‘stenting’ them
What is incentive spirometry?
Patient can document tital volme and with have an ‘Incentive’ to increase it
Turns using the lungs into a game
What is oxygen-induced hypoventilation?
Occurs in patients with severe COPD, who have lost their CO2 drive - oxygen is the main stimuli for the respiratory drive
If given supplyemental oxygen, they will have a decreased respiratory drive and hypoventilate
Why give supplemental oxygen to a patient with a pneumothorax?
Pneumothorax is mostly nitrogen. Increasing teh O2 in the alveoli increasee the nitrogen gradient and results in faster absorption of the pneumothorax
What is the maximum oxygen FiO2 delivered by a nonrebreather mask?
80-90%
How do you figure out the PaO2 from an O2 sat?
40 = 70 50 = 80 60 = 90
How much do you increase the FiO2 by each liter added to the nasal cannula?
3%
