Squamous Cell Carcinoma Flashcards
What are the risk factors for squamous cell carcinoma of the skin?
- Fair skin and cumulative UV radiation exposure.
- Immunosuppression
- Chronic skin ulcers
After which surgery is there a high incidence of squamous cell carcinoma?
Renal transplant (due to immunosuppression)
What is this a presentation of?
Irregular keratotic lesion, ulceration, crusting, area of direct sun-exposure (predilection for head and neck).
Squamous cell carcinoma
Which grows faster, BCC or SCC?
SCC
What is the histology of squamous cell carcinoma?
Tumour cells resemble squamous cells (keratinocytes) in the epidermis.
Is squamous cell carcinoma graded?
Yes:
Well, moderately, or poorly differentiated.
How is squamous cell carcinoma staged?
TNM
What is the risk of metastasis for squamous cell carcinoma?
Only 1-2%, still higher than basal cell carcinoma.
What is the management for squamous cell carcinoma?
Excision
What are the features of squamous cell carcinoma indicating good prognosis?
- Well differentiated tumours
- <20mm in diameter
- <2mm deep
- No associated disease
What are the features of squamous cell carcinoma indicating bad prognosis?
- Poorly differentiated tumours
- > 20mm in diameter
- > 4mm deep
- Immunosuppression
- Lips/ears
