What is the pathophysiology of acne vulgaris?
A
Obstruction of pilosebaceous follicles with keratin plugs.

Which organism is responsible for acne vulgaris?
A
Propionibacterium acnes

What should you explain to a teenager with acne vulgaris as a holistic approach to care?
A
- Dispel myths - not due to dirt/poor hygiene
- Not infectious/contagious
- Ask about mood, body image, self-esteem

What is the treatment for mild acne vulgaris?
A
- Topical benzoyl peroxide/retinoid/antibiotics
2. If response poor, consider combination

What is the treatment for moderate acne vulgaris?
A
- Topical antibiotics and benzoyl peroxide/retinoid
Or - Oral antibiotic and topical benzoyl peroxide
- Also consider using COCP with anti-androgen activity for females (Dianette)

- Refer to specialist
2. Isotretinoin - under specialist supervision
