direct selection
the client selects his architect on direct selection on the basis of:
- reputation
- peronal or business acquanintance or recommendation of a friend
- recommended by architect’s former client
- recommendation of another architect
conducted by committees representing institutions, corporations, or public agencies
comparative selection
the selection process in comparative selection involves
- invitation
- pre-qualification
- interview
- verification
- evaluation & ranking
- negotiation
the client issues an invitation which includes terms of reference (TOR) for the project for the project which is based on design brief prpared by another architect
invitation
architects and/or prc-registered architectural firms (AFs) submit information regarding their qualification and expertise
pre-qualification
the architect explains his methodology in translating the plan/design requirements of the proposed project
interview
the selection committee may visit buildings designed by the architect and check references such as former clients and financial institutions
evaluation & ranking
the architect explains to the client the scope of his services and architect’s fee as prescribed under the architect’s guidelines
negotiation
is used for civic or monumental projects.

the competition may either be an idea competition, design, or design build competetion

various architects or architectural firms (AFs) submit plan/design solutions to a particular design problem and are judged on the basis of comparative excellence

- client/committe will have wider range of options
disadvantages of architectural design competition
- process may be expensive and time consuming
- time and effort required may be discouraged qualified firms from participating
- some prospective clients will seek free services under the guise of design competition
