definition of self confidence
the belief or deree of certainty indiciduals possess about their ability to be successful in sport
what is self efficacy
a belief in the ability to master a specific sporting situation
what is self esteem
how we value and percieve ourselves
what is trait confidence
a constant level of confidence shown in most situations when the player is happy to take part and anxiety is low
the player believes they can perform across a range of sports
what is an example of trait confidence
a rugby player that is the kicker on the team is also good at football, hockey and cricket
what is state confidence
confidence shown in a specific situation. This confidence is temporary and can vary depending on expieriance and personality of the performer
what is an example of state confidence
a rugby player is confident when taking a conversion kick
what is vealeys model of self confidence
the objective sporting situation ( specific situation you find youself in) leads to either trait confidence or competitivness of individual.
these lead to state confidence
which leads to the performance of the individual - how well they perform
these lead to the results - was it successful
the results lead back up to trait confidence and competitivness of the individual
how can you improve confidence
1) control arousal with stress management techniques
2) demonstrations - done by a role model who has equal ability
3) highlight past successful performances - coach could use video analysis or similar to demonstrate previous times the performer has been successful and that they can be successful again
4) provude support or encouragment
5) plan for success in training
6) goal setting
7) attribute success to the athlete
8 ) pyschological training - utilise visualisation to improve their confidence as they will have seen the performance going well
