what are the key benefits of goal setting
1) increase motivation - increase task persistance and maintaining effort until task has been achieved
2) improving confidence - positively reinforce the aspects which are going well
3) regulating and sustaining effort - using short, medium and long term goals, coach reviews them and can help maintain focus
4) reducing anxiety - goals can be used to give control to the athlete as such can provide a structure to training and competition
5) improving performance - when used effectively can improve technique, performance and outcome
what are outcome goals
based against the performance of others and the outcome or result of the success of the athlete. Not always to win - it could be to get in the top 3 places in the league.
what do outcome goals help achieve

only focused on end result, goal is out of the athletes control, so may increase anxiety
by comparing themselves to others the athlete may lose self confidence as they may not be as good as others
can increase confidence if the goal is achieved.
what are performance goals
goals which are judged against previous performances by the idividual and are ways to improve personal accomplishments

improve self confidence as it is a short term achievable goal
helps mobilise effort in a demotivated individual
help reassure the individual that they are on the right lines for performance improvements
what does SMARTER stand for
specific
measurable
achievable
realistic
time bound
re evaluate
re do
describe the specific principle in smarter
clear and precise, ideally using data
needs to be relevant to the performer and the sport
describe the measurable principle in smarter
assessment needs to be made with access to statistics
distance, time , number of runs
describe the achievable principle of smarter
the performer should be able to reach the goal - is it within their capabilities
describe the realistic principle of smarter
the goal should be within reach to promote motivation and sustain effort
describe the time - bound principle of smarter
need to identify short and long term steps
there should be a deadline to complete the goal
describe the evaluate principle of smarter
the performer needs to review their progress towards their aims so future goals can be more focused
describe the re - do principle of smarter
once the goal has been completed the target can be adjusted

what is an example of measurable
use of GPS data for number of sprints in a game
what is an example of achievable
