what is motivation
A
The drive to succeed. It is the external stimuli and internal mechanisms which drive and direct your behaviours.

what is intrinsic motivation
A
- comes from within the athlete
- the inner drive
- pride, satisfaction in completing a task
- done for its own sake and no rewards

what is extrinsic motivation
A
- comes from an outside source
- coaches, spectators
- tangible rewards such as certificates
- intangible rewards such as praise

A
physical and can be touched / held

what are the negatives of using extrinsic rewards
A
- if coaches put too much emphasis on extrinsic rewards, athletes may become over reliant on the rewards and they may lead to a loss in value and incentive
- players might begin to expect rewards
- may lead to cheating as their is pressure to win

how can a coach develop motivation
A
- with young players offer rewards early to reinforce behaviour ( use sparingly to maintain its value )
- make activity fun and enjoyable
- highlight health benefit
- highlight positive role models
- attribute success to internal factors
