What is a skill?
A skill is an action or a way of behaving that can be learned. Once learned, a skill can be performed easily and efficiently again and again with the same or a very similar outcome.
What is an ability?
Ability is something that is inherited. It is an inherited, stable trait that determines an individual’s potential to learn or acquire a skill.
What are the classifications of skill?
Basic, complex, open, closed, self-paced, externally paced, gross and fine.
What is a basic skill?
A basic skill is a simple skill that doesn’t require much concentration.
What is a complex skill?
A complex skill is a skill that requires a great deal of concentration and coordination to perform.
What is an open skill?
An open skill is a skill that is performed in a certain way to deal with a changing or unstable environment.
What is a closed skill?
A closed skill is a skill that is not affected by the performers within it or the environment.
What is a self-paced skill?
A self-paced skill is a skill that is started when the performer decides to start it.
What is an externally paced skill?
An externally paced skill is a skill that is started because of an external factor.
What is a gross movement?
A gross movement is a skill that uses large muscle groups to perform big, strong powerful movements.
What is a fine movement?
A fine movement is a skill involving small precise movements.
What is a performance goal?
Performance goals are personal standards to be achieved.
What is an outcome goal?
An outcome goal is a goal that focuses on the end result and on winning.
What does Smart stand for?
Specific, measurable, accepted, realistic and time-bound.
What is information processing?
Information processing is the name given to the process that a performer goes through when they make and act on decisions.
What are the four stages of information processing?
Input, decision making, output and feedback.
What is intrinsic feedback?
Intrinsic feedback is information that a performer receives from within.
What is Extrinsic feedback?
Extrinsic feedback is information a performer receives about their performance from outside themselves.
What is guidance?
Guidance is a way of giving information to a performer|.
What is feedback?
Feedback is the actual information that is given to the performer.
What are the four types of guidance?
Visual, verbal, manual and mechanical.
What is visual guidance?
Visual guidance is presented in a form that the performer can see.
What is verbal guidance?
Verbal Guidance is when a coach describes how to perform a skill or tells a performer something.
What is manual guidance?
Manual guidance involves a coach physically moving a performer into the correct position or supporting them as they perform a skill.
What is mechanical guidance?
Mechanical guidance takes place when objects or aids are used to assist in the coaching process.
What is positive feedback?
Positive feedback is about what was correct or good about the performance.
What is negative feedback?
Negative feedback is about what was incorrect or bad about their performance.
What is knowledge of performance?
Knowledge of performance is feedback that provides the performer with information about their performance generally and about their technique more specifically.
What is input?
Input is the data received from the display. In the case of a performer, the information will be received via their senses, either by sense of sight, sound, touch or intuition.
What is decision-making?
Decision-making is when the selected data is analysed and appropriate response is selected.
What is output?
Output is when the decision is acted on.
What is feedback?
Feedback is the data that is received in response to the output.
