A
Bacterial translocation in which bacteria cross the intestinal barrier

Fever
Abdominal pain
Leukocytosis
Encephalopathy

A
Paracentesis
If + ascitic fluid bacterial culture
> 250 cells/mm^3 PMN
PMN= WBC x % neutrophils

Ceftriaxone

Primary treatment
Duration: 5-7 days
SE: diarrhea
Monitoring: s/sx of infection

Day 1: 1.5 g/kg x 1 (within 6 hours)
Day 3: 1 g/kg x 1

Secondary prophylaxis
Indefinitely
SE: AKI, photosensitivity, hyperkalemia, hyponatremia, SJS, agranulocytosis
Monitoring: SCr, electrolytes, CBC
