Spine & back Flashcards
Cervical spine
C1-C7 C1 - atlas C2 - axis foramen transversarium - VA passes through spinous process bifurcates
Thoracic spine
T1-T12
Demifacets - articulates with head of rib
Lumbar spine
L1-L5
Sacrum & coccyx
fused vertebrae
S5 C4
Ligaments in spine
Anterior/posterior longitudinal ligaments
Ligamentum flavum - between the lamina
interspinous and supraspinous ligaments
intertransverse ligaments
Superficial back muscles
Trapezius
Latissimus dorsi
Levator scapulae
Rhomboids
Trapezius
origin: nuchal ligament, skull, C7 to T12
insertion: clavicle, acromion, spine of scapula
innervation: CN11
action: elevation
Latissimus dorsi
origin: T6-T12, iliac crest, thoracolumbar fascia
insertion: intertubercular groove
innervation: thoracodorsal
action: adductor
Levator scapulae
origin: C1-C4
insertion: medial border of scapula
innervation: Dorsal scapular nerve
action: elevates scapular
Rhomboids
origin: minor - C7-T1, Major - T2-T5
insertion: medial border of scapular
innervation: dorsal scapular nerve
action: retract and rotate the scapular
Intermediate muscles
serratus posterior superior & inferior
Serratus posterior superior
origin: C7-T3
insertion: ribs 2-5
innervation: intercostal nerves
action: elevates ribs 2-5
Serratus posterior inferior
origin: T11-L3
insertion: ribs 9-12
innervation: intercostal nerves
action: depresses ribs 9-12
Deep muscles
spinotransversales - splenius capitis and cervicis
erector spinae - iliocostalis, longissimus, spinalis
Iliocostalis
most lateral one
origin: common tendinous origin
insertion: costal angle of ribs and cervical transverse process
innervation: posterior rami of spinal nerves
