Specialised cells Flashcards
1
Q
what are specialised cells
A
developed certain characteristics in order to perform particular functions
2
Q
How to cells specialize
A
undergoing differentiation: a process that involves the cell gaining new structures within the cell in order for it to be suited to its function
3
Q
Stem cells
A
have the ability to differentiate their whole lives (these are called stem cells)
4
Q
Examples of specialised cells
A
red blood cells, ciliated cells, sperm cells, egg cells
5
Q
Advantages of stem cells ( just two needed)
A
- Can be useful for replacing damaged cells
- Bone marrow transplant, where an adult stem cell can be used to treat leukemia and other blood cancers
- You could use your own organs for transplant therefore don’t need a donor
- No chance of organ rejection organs are made from the person own stem cells
6
Q
Disadvantages of stem cells ( just two needed)
A
- Unethical, as the usage and destruction of embryos
- Mutations can occur in stem cells cultured for several years.
- Impossible to get embryonic stem cells as they have to be collected before birth.
- difficult to find suitable stem donors
