Specialised cells Flashcards
What are specialised cells?
Cells that carry out a specific function.
How are sperm cells specialised?
Has a tail to swim to the egg.
A lot of mitochondria to provide energy for swimming.
How are nerve cells specialised?
Long to cover more distances in the body.
Have branches at the end to connect to other nerve cells,
How are muscle cells specialised?
Long so they have space to contract.
Lots of mitochondria to provide energy to contract.
How are root hair cells specialised?
Big surface area for absorbing water and mineral ions from the soil.
How are phloem and xylem cells specialised?
To form the tubes, the cells are long and join end to end.
Lots of cells inside the tubes for stuff to flow through - xylems are hollow and phloems have very few subcellular structures.
