Infection & Response WPS 2017 Flashcards
What is a pathogen?
A microorganism that causes infectious disease
What are the four types of pathogens?
Fungi, protists, bacteria, viruses
How do viruses reproduce?
They take over a host cell by injecting their own DNA. The host cell makes virus parts until it bursts and is destroyed.
How do bacteria reproduce?
By splitting in half. This is called binary fission.
How do viruses make us feel sick?
They destroy our cells.
How do bacteria make us feel sick?
They reproduce rapidly and release toxins.
What do antibiotics do?
Kill bacteria or stop them from reproducing.
What is gonorrhoea caused by?
A bacterium.
What is Salmonella caused by?
A bacterium.
What is rose black spot caused by?
A fungus.
What is malaria caused by?
A protist.
Name 4 ways our body stops pathogens from entering our bloodstream.
Skin, nose hair, ciliated cells in the windpipe, acid in the stomach.
What three ways can the white blood cells defend against pathogens?
Phagocytosis, producing antitoxins, producing antibodies.
What type of cell is involved in defense?
White blood cells.
What three things can antibodies do to destroy pathogens?
Make pathogens stick together, destroy pathogens, mark cells to be destroyed.
