Special Circulation: Maternal-Fetal Flashcards
What happens to blood volume in pregnancy?
Increases 20-100%
What is physiologic anemia of pregnancy?
Plasma increases more so than hematocrit causing relative anemia
What happens to CO in pregnancy?
Increases
What causes an increase in CO?
Initially increased SV
Later on increase in HR
What happens to BP during pregnancy?
Decrease in systolic
Great decrease in diastolic
Why does BP decrease in pregnancy?
Increase in circulating vessels and vasodilation
What causes supine hypotensive syndrome?
When the mother is lying down the fetus can collapse the IVC reducing venous return and cardiac output
What are the four unique shunts in fetal circulation?
Placenta
Ductus venosus
Foramen ovale
Ductus arteriosus
How does the fetal heart pump?
In parallel as apposed to series
What is combined cardiac output?
The sum of outputs of the right and left ventricles
What organs does the placenta function as?
Lungs
GI tract
Liver
Kidneys
Where does half of the CCO go?
Placenta
What does the ductus venosus do?
Bypasses liver to deliver oxygenated blood from umbilical vein into IVC
Which vessels have the highest hemoglobin saturation?
Umbilical vein and ductus venosus
What causes high resistance in the fetal lungs?
Hypoxic vasoconstriction and acidosis
