Spatial Analysis Flashcards
GIS
Geographic Information Systems. Broad term for computerized mapping systems and data.
Raster data
Data represented as a regular grid of cells that have different values (temp. overlay, etc.)
Vector data
Data represented as points, lines, and polygons in a GIS system.
Digitizing
Creating mapping data by tracing over old maps, photos, etc.
Georeference
The way that GIS systems maintain locational accuracy. May use lat / long.
Themes (GIS)
The type of map you are trying to make. I.E. Watersheds, location of medical services, vineyards, etc.
Layers (GIS)
A data layer which gives some set of information. (Base layer, water features, roads, etc.)
Attribute (GIS)
Information about an object or feature. Represented in a data table.
GPS
Global Positioning System. Satellite-based navigation system ran by the US government.
TIGER (GIS)
Topographically Integrated Geographical Encoding and Referencing map. Used for census data mapping.
DEM (GIS)
Digital Elevation Models. Show digital data about elevation.
LIDAR
Light Detection and Ranging. Use of lasers to gather information on earths surface or surroundings.
