2010 Decennial Census
many changes implemented. Long form was discontinued in favor of a 10-question short form.
2000 Decennial Census
Mailed to each household. 17% got a long form to act as a sample population. 84% were given the short form. First census to allow marking more than one race.
Census response rate
1990 and 2000 = 65% response rate.
Urbanized area
An urban nucleus of 50,000 or more. Must have a core with a pop. density of 1,000 people per square mile. approximately 452 in US as of year 2000. approximately 68% of Americans live in one.
Urban cluster
At least 2,500 but less than 50,000. Pop density of 1,000 people per square mile. Approximately 11% of pop live in one.
Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA)
Includes at least one city of 50,000 or more or an urbanized area, and a metropolitan population of at least 100,000.
Micropolitan Statistical Area (also MSA)
More than 10,000 and less than 50,000. Include central county and adjacent counties with a high degree of social and economic integration.
Census designated place
CDP. equivalent of an incorporated place for stats purposes. Used for settled populations that are not incorporated.
Consolidated MSA.
(CMSA) is made up of several Primary MSA’s. An example is the Dallas-Fort Worth Consolidated Metropolitan Area. Dallas and Fort Worth are each primary metropolitan statistical areas.
Core based statistical area
CBSA. Core area with at least 10,000 people that is socially and economically integrated when combined with adjacent areas.
Megalopolis
Any many-centered, multi-city, urban area of 10 million or more. Usually low-density, complex economic specialization. Jean Gottman (1961) in his book of the same name.
Census tract
Census tract typically has a population between 2,000 and 8,000 people. It is the smallest area where all information is released.
Census block
Census block is the smallest level at which the Census data is collected. There are typically 400 housing units per block.
Census Block Group
A group of Census Blocks. They generally contain 600-3,000 people, and are used to present data and control block numbering.
Minor Civil Division
(MCD) is a unit only used in 29 states and usually corresponds to a municipality.
Census County Divisions
Used in the 21 states that do not have MCDs.
Tribal Designated Statistical Area
a unit drawn by tribes that do not have a recognized land area. These are defined independently of the standard county-based census delineations.
Threshold Population
Pop threshold for qualifying for certain government programs. (Think CDBG)

American Community Survey
Replaces the long form in the decennial census. Reaches 2.5% pop annually. Annual rotation means no household receives the survey twice in the same 5 years.
Baby boomers
1946-1964. Named for high post-ww2 birth rate.
Generation X
These people were born between 1965 and 1976, which was a period of low birth rates.
Generation Y
These are the children of the baby boomers. These people were born between approximately 1977 and 2000. Also considered and “Echo Boom”.
Generation Z
These are the children born after 2000. The exact years of this generation vary depending on the source.
