Message Pyramid
3 layers. 1 = key message, 2 = 1st proof layer (Factual statement), 2nd = 2nd proof layer (Backs up first with a stat or something)
Proactive media engagement
When planners want to push a message out to the media and reach out themselves.
Social media
No gatekeepers on messaging, but need to be careful with relation to sunshine laws (deleting comments etc.)

Design Charette
An intensive collaboration that brings together citizens, stakeholders, and staff to develop a detailed design plan for a specific area. Typically small groups led by a qualified design person.
Delphi Method
Structured public participation process developed by Airforce in 1944. People complete a series of questionnaires, which get narrowed down after each round until they lead towards a single consensus.
Nominal Group Technique
Used so a group can come to a decision by vote. List of ideas –> delete duplicates –> rank solutions –>discuss rankings –Select solution with highest ranking.
Facilitation
Used for groups with disagreements on complex problems. A respected person or pro. facilitator comes in to lead the meeting and keep on track.
Mediation
A 3rd party facilitator is brought in and the discussion is very structured / multi-stage. The final agreement will have clear written policy/goals. Used in lieu of going to court.
Public hearing
Usually planning commission or city council. Allows formal citizen input. Often legally required. Not super effective in building public consensus.
Visual preference survey
Citizens evaluate images of natural and built environment and note preferences. Can help figure out preferred design direction of a community.
Brainstorming
Informal approach to gathering input on a project/ idea. Usually small group of staff, PC official, etc.
