Bodhisattva
a being who has attained enlightenment but chooses to remain in this world in order to help others advance spiritually. *A potential Buddha.
Buddha
a spiritual teacher from the Indian subcontinent, on whose teachings Buddhism was founded. Buddha was the first awakened being.
Chaitya
a type of buddhist temple found in India. Built in a basilican form, it is highly decorated with sculpture and is usually carved from a cave or a natural rock location. It houses a sacred shrine (stupa) for worship.
Harappan
first discovered civilization in the late 12th century.
Mudra
a symbolic hand gesture in Buddhist art that denotes certain behaviors, actions, or feelings.
Nirvana
an ancient Sanskrit term used in Indian religions to describe the profound peace of mind that is acquired with moksha (liberation). In shramanic thought, it is the state of being free from suffering.
