Statute Law
Law made by Parliament Statute law over rules common law if the two clash,
Case Law
Law that is based on judges’ decisions in previous similar cases.
Common Law
Law made outside Parliament. It has developed over centuries and can be based on custom.
Bylaws
Laws made by local authorities that apply to their areas. They do this with the permission of Parliament.
Rules and regulations
Made by organisations such as the railways, bus companies, school.
International law
The UK is subject to many international agreements and treaties
European Law
Mainly law arising from the European Union. Britain plays a part in making these laws.
Regulations
Binding on all the member states (They have to be followed)
Directives
Binding on all the member states, but the states can decide how they bring them in.
Decisions
Binding just on the states or organisations they refer to.
Recommendations and opinions
should be followed but are not binding.
