The countries leaders make all the decisions with no reference to the population. As a result fundamental human rights may be ignored.
Direct Democracy
Where a single person may represent itself or a smaller community Eg. Protest
An individual representing themselves
Referendum
Putting the issues to the people as a whole and allowing them to vote rather than their elected representative
Example of Referendum
1975- Britain - Whether to stay in the EU
1998 - Wales held whether to stay in the UK
2014 - Scotland held whether to stay in the UK
Democracy
A system of government in which decisions are taken either by the population directly or through representatives they have elected.
Human Rights you would find in democracy that would not be present in a dictatorships?
Right to vote
Free from discrimination
Anyone can form a political party and stand as candidate.
Representative democracy
A type of democracy where citizens have the right to choose someone to represent them on a council or in Parliament as an MP
Advantage of representative democracy
When people are not available, there would still have a representative represents their thoughts.
Can form a political parties as they have similar views
Features of Democracy
Right to protest and demonstrate Independent legal system - free from government control Equality before law Freedom of belief Freedom of association Independent mass media Criticise the government without fear of punishment Competing political parties Regular free and fair elections
