Sound Flashcards
What is sound ?
A wave or vibration that travels through the three states of matter, it is something that can be heard
How does sound travel ?
It starts with a mechanical movement causing vibration and causing the particles around the object to vibrate too and these vibration passes form one molecule to the other and help sound travel into our ears
What can’t sound travel through ? And why ?
Sound cannot travel through a vacuum
Because there are no particles to vibrate
How many hertz is the human ear capable of detecting ?
20Hz to 20,000 Hz
Only between these hertz
What is the relationship between frequency , pitch and wavelength ?
Higher the frequency = Higher pitch = Shorter wavelength
What are the two sounds we cannot hear ?
Ultrasonic Above 20,000 Hertz
and
infrasonic Below 20 Hertz
What is frequency measured in ?
Herts (Hz)
Where does sound wave travels fastest ?
Solids
Explanation : Because the particles are closer together and easier for the vibration to pass on to one molecule to the other
Where does sound wave travel slower ?
Gases
Explanation : Because it hard for the molecules to pass on the vibration since it so far apart
