Digestive system Flashcards
Stages of the digestive system
- Chewing
- Tongue
- Small food particles travel down to the pharynx
- Esophagus
- Stomach
- Small intestine
- Large intestine
What is the stage chewing for ?
- To help food particles to break down to little pieces so its easier to swallow
- The mouth contains saliva produced by the salivary glands that contains enzymes and help break down the food particles even more
What is the tongue stage in the digestive system for ? What is the process called ?
Helps push the small food particles down the pharynx
This process is called swallowing
What is the purpose of the digestive system ?
breaks nutrients into parts small enough for the body to absorb and use for energy, growth and cell repair
What is the stage pharynx for in the digestive system ?
After swallowing the small food particle it travels down to the pharynx and then esophagus
What is the function of the stage Esophagus for ?
After travelling down the esohagus it travels down to the stomach
What is the function of the stage stomach in the digestive system ?
- After food reaches the stomach it stays there for 4 hours
- THen produces a acid called hydrochloric acid and enzymes called (pepsin)
- The hydrochloric acid helps to break down the food particles even more so it can be absorbed by our body
- The enzyme (pepsin) helps to break down the proteins
- The stomach also kills bacteria so we don’t fall sick
What is the stage small intestine in the digestive system do ?
- A lot of bile (produced by liver) helps break down fat in the small intestine
- And the pancreases releases other enzymes into the small intestine to help digest all kinds of food particle .
- The small intestine then absorbs them then transfer the food particles to our body through blood
What does the large intestine do in the stage digestive system ?
Particles that are not absorbed by the small intestine reaches the large intestine .
It then absorbes water and other particles and send the waste material out of our body
Parts of the digestive system
- Mouth
- Salivary glands
- Pharynx (throat)
- Esophagus
- Stomach
- Liver
7, Gall bladder - Small intestine
- Pancreas
- Large intestine
- Anus
Function of the digestive organs ?
- Mouth : Contains teeth and saliva that breaks down the food
- Salivary glands : Produces saliva in the mouth and the saliva contains enzymes that help break dow the food even more
- Pharynx : A tube for food to travel down to the oesophagus
- Esophagus : A tube for food to travel down to the stomach
- Stomach : Produces hydrochloric acid to breaks down the food particles further and enzymes (pepsin) to break down proteins. The stomach also kills bacteria
- Small intestine : Juices from liver bile produced into the small intestine and help brea down fats , and pancreas which releases enzymes to help digest all different types of food particles . Then absorbs the food and transfer it to our body through blood
- Large intestine : Collect food particles that are not absorbed by the small intestine and absorbes water and other particles and send the waste material out of the body
- Gall bladder : Stores bile
- Liver : produces bile
- Pancreas : Produces enzymes to help digest all different types of food particles
