Somatosensory & Motor Systems Flashcards
What are motor sequences governed by?
prefrontal cortex, premotor cortex, motor cortex
What is the function of the prefrontal cortex, premotor cortex, and motor cortex?
plans movement, organizes movement sequences, produces specific movements
What is hierarchical vs parallel organization?
goes from less to more complex, multiple processes happening at the same time
What are innate behaviours?
regulated by brainstem, don’t need to be taught, stereospecific (same way each time),
What is the efferent motor pathways?
brain to spinal cord to muslces
What is paraplegia vs quadraplegia?
broken below cervical region vs broken in cervical region
What are mirror neurons?
in premotor cortex near broca’s, allow us to process facial expressions and interactions between people
When corticospinal tracts reach the medulla they cross, what does this make?
if they cross they make lateral corticospinal tract (most do), if they don’t cross then they make anterior corticospinal tract
What is the function of the lateral corticospinal tract?
involved with moving things on outside of body ie. limbs
What is the function of the anterior corticospinal tract?
involved with moving thigns that are central ie. trunk
What is the role of the basal ganglia?
modulating cortical motor systems, habit learning, motivation, emotion, motor control
What can caudate or striatum damage can cause what?
dyskinesia (huntington’s, tourettes etc) or hypokinetic movements (parkinson)
Do you think the globus pallidus is more or less active in parkinson’s?
less (produces too much movemnet ie tremors)
What is ataxia?
general impairment of movement (posture, fine motor control)
What is dysmetria?
inappropiate force, toruble with accuracy (sitting in chair, reaching for objects)
